Q. Was religion only invented to control uneducated masses?
A. World was always a violent place. We (probably) used to be (and are) flesh eating monkeys and thus needed violence to fulfill our needs. Violence for food, violence for choosing a mate. As we evolved, tribes were formed, and each tribe had specific set of rules to keep it together. Then one person realized that he can manipulate people with his stories, religion was born. And until religion remains, world is still a jungle.
Q. "If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." 1 Corinthians 13
What do you think the words 'prophecy' and 'faith' mean in this context?
A. Prophecy here may be the skill of having enough knowledge to predict the results, and faith may be the confidence (if not in ourselves then in something outside and bigger than us), which is required if the work is greater than our ability. And if religion is telling things like this, i do not think it is bad for humanity (if everybody chooses to love instead of getting forced to)
